Asalaamu Alaikum, Hello, Bonjour, Greetings to one and all,

My name is Chris, I'm a newbie rc flyer and I'll be moving to Doha (Al Khore) August the 28th this year.  I'll be taking some time off before starting work and I was hoping to spend a lot of that time flying my planes..........I fly electric rc models and I'll be bringing a load of new ones with me to keep me entertained.

I've got a couple of questions:
Are there any restrictions on the type of rc equipment i bring with me?
I run a 35Mhz transmitter - do i need to buy any particular crystal? or can I stick with what ive got?
Where do you lot get your supplies from out there? and is it cheap or pricey?  Can someone give me an idea.......if it's expensive out there then i'll bring everything i need with me.
Does anyone else fly electric?
Would anyone be kind enough to tell me where abouts I can fly out there? and will i need any sort of licence.
Do you all meet on a regular basis?

Thanks and all the best,
Chris

Hi Chris -

Welcome to Qatar !  Great to see one more RC flyer joining the RC community here.

Most of your questions are already answered in other threads on the forum, but I will try to summarize them here.

1) The procedure for import (that is, if you are getting stuff shipped instead of carrying it personally with you), is to get a letter from the Qatar Scientific Club (QSC) and present it to the customs authorities.  If you are carrying things in person, then typically no questions are asked.  Worst case, you can always claim that you will collect it after getting registered as a member of the aviation division of the QSC.

2) Any frequencies are allowed AFAIK.  The crystal is also fine, just need to check for conflicts with fellow flyers when you are out flying, just like you do anywhere else.

3) You can expect everything to be about 25% (or more) higher in price compared to US online sellers.  So bring as much as you can, but too much may cause you some hassle in customs.

4) Many people fly electric (airplanes and helis).

5) Where to fly and license requirements are answered here:  http://rcqatar.com/rc-in-qatar/rc-flying-beginner-in-qatar/

6) Yes, every weekend, and sometimes during the week  Wink

Thanks for that Anwar,

I think i'll buy the expensive stuff over here and leave the small bits and pieces for over there.  Have you tried ordering items from china before? using ebay?

How many members meet on the weekends? have any of the members entered that competition in July? the QSC one (desiging and building your own aircraft).  I'd be very interested in knowing what they come up with.......wish i was there to compete.  Is it a competition that they run every year?

It sounds great for flying. I have been stuck in Kazakhstan for 6 months without flying and will become a very active member....promise!

I am happy with IMAC planes 50-100cc.  I was wondering if anyone is flying big stuff there?  Will it cause a problem if I fly big planes?  I will have to wait for my res permit but will be coming out the field as soon as I can.

I have all my kit boxed and ready to come from the UK.

See you all soon

You can fly big planes at the official RC field in Al-Khor.  There are many fliers here who fly 120 size or higher.

Anwar,

Thanks a bunch. I really cannot wait.  I can see a number of all night building sessions shortly after my arrival!
