Title: Info For Importing RC goods to Qatar that Get Stuck at Customs (Join QSC)
Post by: Head Hunter on December 08, 2011, 04:05:56 PM
Hi Guys

I'm sure that most of you here will know this already but i thought i would post a little info about what happens when you are importing some RC stuff and it get stuck at customs for those new to RC in Qatar.

Ok first off this does not happen to every single RC item that you have shipped to Qatar.
Over the last 2 years i must have had 20 packages delivered without issue. Today i have my fist package stopped at customs.

I only found this out because i was investigating the delay of a package that should have arrived a week ago.
So first lesson is to keep track of your packages. IF one is more than 4-6 days late call QPost and ask where it is.

I found out today that a new foam plane i bought from HK is being held at customs.

So you need to go to the post office and collect the receipt for the package that states it has been detained at customs.

The next thing you need to do is go to the Qatar Scientific Club and Join. If you are not already a member the you need to do the following
To join the Qatar Scientific club you will need to go to the office on Wholesale Market Street with your Valid Qatar ID or Passport plus one Passport Photograph
Telephone number for QSC is 44583780 The opening times are as follows
Sunday to Thursday 8am - 12pm then 4pm - 8pm

You need to go and see Jamal the Aviation Centre Supervisor.
He will then process your membership that currently costs QAR300 per year
This should take about 24hours so if you go one evening you should be able to go the next evening to collect your membership.

Then you can take your post office customs receipt to the QSC and they will give you a letter to allow you to import it.
If it is allot of electronic parts such a Transmitter or  Reciever etc then you may also need to get a letter from the ICT
I have not had to do that so i cant tell you how to do that. Yet.

When you have the letter from QSC you then take this back to QPost and they will contact customs and release your package and it should then be delivered to the original postal address.

So there you have it.

Its a PITA but a sometimes necessary Evil to practice our hobby in this wonderful country we all currently live in.
(in case you were wondering i was being sarcastic when i said wonderful)

If anyone else has anything to add or i have made a mistake or knows a better more simple way to get your stuff released from Customs please let us know!!

I will update the above with any new information to keep it as current as possible and then maybe our esteemed Guru Mr Anwar will put this as a sticky in the forum

Cheers

Ben

Very nice summary !

The location of the QSC is not really on Mesaieed Road, it is between the Vegetable Market and Abu Hamour (ie Al Jazeera Academy) roundabouts.

I had to go to ICT once, the process (back then) was to fill out a form, provide a copy of the customs notice about the item being held, and pay QR40 processing fee.  Someone from ICT would visit the customs office, and clear the item, typically the next day.

Well, I think I may or may not be stuck in the customs trap. Ordered an Aeroworks kit from a hobby shop in Dubai, had it shipped via EMS to Doha. Everything was clean as a whistle as far as document accuracy and tracking until it hit the Qatar side of EMS. Now, the address is mucked up, my name is totally mispelled, and when I called the Qatar PO branch that has the item near the airport, they have no idea what to do with it. When I called, I was passed to 3 different people before I got one that spoke enough english to try and figure out what's going on, I'm like...really!!!. Is there really that big of a difference between Dubai and Qatar with professionalism? So now I play the waiting game for them to call me back and let me know what they need for me to pick up my kit.

Usually there are no taxes for low value personal items.  If your company name is mentioned on the box, they may treat it as a commercial item and tax it.

Number of items, value of items and size of items may also lead to tax.

Hi Guys,

Hi Guys, Hope that last weekend saw some flying after all those weeks of strong winds.

OK has anyone got any experience when bringing in a plane through the airport, as in travelling and arriving (check in baggage) with it on a incoming flight? I am in Singapore right now and just spent several hours at a place called Fook Hai Building where there are like 5 RC shops selling all sorts of stuff. I am very tempted to get a (or 2) plane to bring back to Doha.

I have not got my QSC membership yet and I am worried that when I arrive with a rather large box, customs may stop me and detain or worse confiscate the plane.

OK waiting to hear from anyone.

Best regards,

Chris

I brought one plane 42 size from India 4 months back. Customs just asked me about plane and where do I fly and let me go.

Hi everyone,

Just want to share my experience on bringing in planes both through the airport as baggage and via Aramax shop and ship.

I recently brought in a plane when I came back from vacation and it was stopped at customs. They seem to know what you already have because the detectors went off when I walk into the customs area. They detained the plane and I return the next day and was told to get a letter from QSC. So I joined QSC which took a few days since new members needed to be approved by 2 officias in the club. After They signed off my membership, I paid QAR 300, went and see Mr. Mutaz for the form to import planes. The reception office took another 15mins and I got my letter. The next day I went to airport customs and got the plane out.

Via Aramex is easier. Once I ordered my plane and it reached Aramex New York, it was issued a package number. I took the print out invoice from Amazoon where I bought the plane and went to QSC. Again I saw Mutaz, showed him the invoice from Amazon and got the letter. Took the letter to Aramex with my package number and left it with them. So once my plane arrived, it can clear customs immediately. No need for Aramex to call and inform you that a letter is needed.

Customs always ask if the plane has a camera and the answer is always no. But cameras and FPV gear can be bought locally or self assembled. Go figure. The customs office at the airport told me that helis are different and they need a letter from some other authority. Sorry no idea about that. One important thing is that what is on the letter prepared by QSC must match your import. If not the letter will be rejected and you have to get another letter, more delay less flying.

I hope that the above will help others with importing planes. If I get one via postal service then I will have to find out how that goes. More then likely the same letter given to a different place.

Chris,

I have raised the issue to Mostafa Nasr, formerly from the QSC and he said he will have a look into the matter.

So far no news from him.

I was just at the Qatar Scientific Club (31 May 2015) asking about membership and getting letters for importing planes.

1 No more membership will be issued for Aviation.

2 Aviation membership is being transferred to the new club in Al Khor. Said this will take a few weeks. So far it has been more then a month since someone tried to join and was told the same.

3 Current members can still get letter from QSC for importing stuff.

Best not import any new planes until the new club is up and running. Look on the bright side. We will save money for these few months.

Hope this is useful info
