Title: Source of RC materials in Qatar (outside of RC shops)
Post by: anwar on May 06, 2011, 05:33:10 PM
This thread will document sources of RC stuff in Qatar, outside of the RC shops.  I guess most people know about Jarir being a good place for glues and tapes, and Rawnaq and other libraries being sources of foam (foamboard, sunboard etc, but not depron, EPP etc).

Here is some information about coro.

Anyone interested in building from plans, can use coroplast (known as "coro") as an alternative to foam.  2mm and 3mm coro works pretty well. 5mm coro is a bit heavy, so you will need bigger power setup, but is the better choice if you want to build a glow powered model (like .25 or .40 engine powered).

Coro was not available most of the time here.  Currently it is in stock at Al Rawnaq at the Old Airport location.  Please grab it while the stocks last :)  Note that the thin ones are a little towards the back, behind a pillar.

People have put coro to great use, as you can see in these threads :

http://www.rcindia.org/self-designed-diy-and-college-projects/tricopter/ (great use of orange colored coro and black tape for the canopy!)

http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/cub-using-3mm-coro-and-6mm-depron/ (Nice beginner model made out of coro)

http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/the-mugi-evo-coro-flyer/msg11639/#msg11639

Hope to see many coro planes on the field soon :)  I saw a beautiful one with brother Ali when he visited me today, and that is how I came to know about the coro stock... been looking for it for a long time !

Also attached is a picture of the Rawnaq stock.

Here is an example of a nice plane built with 3mm coro. This one is nitro powered, but just use your regular electric setup and it should fly fine.

Going to make one myself.

I maidened it on Friday in the stromg winds and I was very impressed.

I am in the process of building some new antenna for the FPV system and i need some good quality Coax Cable and some SMA RF connectors
Its RG316 coaxial cable I need or RG58 or RG174 plus some female SMA connectors.

Does any one know where I can find some in Doha?

Thanks in Advance

Please see the Google Maps link in this post.

I would suggest you take some printouts of the pictures of the actual products you need (like connectors), that would make identification easy for them.  In addition to Annabi, there is also another big parts store called "RS Electronics" next to Annabi, just ask for it.

Nice to see someone doing Tri and Quad stuff in Qatar !

Did you get the MultiWii using their custom bare circuit board ? I mean this : http://www.multiwiicopter.com/collections/all/products/warthoxfpv-multiwiicopter-board-v2-0-naked

Or did you use a standard PCB and wire it all up yourself ?  Would love to see all this in person :)

Here is a close friend's WMC build thread : http://www.rcindia.org/self-designed-diy-and-college-projects/quad-using-arduino-and-wii-mp-and-nunchuck/

Arab Bank roundabout is in the souq area,  When you are driving from Jaidha flyover to Souq Waqif, Arab bank roundabout is the one you get after the Sofitel Signal light. The shop is located about 50m on the right side of the roundabout.  There are many shops on the same street, Basheer radio located on the side of the roundabout is another big shop.

I will be test flying my new Hobbyking EPP FPV this Friday (If the weather is favorable).

Hi Guys

Many thanks for the location details of the Bashir Radio and RS Electronics I will try to get there today.

Im sure they will have what I need.

Anwar
Im afraid i cheeted a little with my MultiWii i did indeed buy one of the boards avalble from one of teh users on RCG. not that particular one but one similar by a guy called Jussi. He now has an onine shop here http://www.viacopter.eu/
Its a great board that comes with all the components you need accept the header pins WM+ Nunchuk or Arduino ProMini. I purchased all of those online from various places.

It was all very easy to solder up and i have been very pleased with teh way it all works so far i still need to do all the fine tuning though and as you know the weather hsant been very helpful lately!

If i did it again i would consider getting a board from Whitespy on RCG for 95usd inc the gyro chip and accelerometer chips.
When you take into consideration all the costs the WM+ nunchuck and all the shipping i think it may have been cheaper to buy one finished and tested from this guy
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1438619

I will be sure to bring the Tricopter down to Wakrah or wherever the current place is to fly one of these day.
I am going on leave soon so it will probably be in July sometime.

Thanks again everyone

I once met a Lebanese gentleman who said he got very good quality bearing from the Industrial Area automotive shops.  I don't have contact information to get precise locations though :(

HI Guys

I need help finding some electronic components again.

I need a very small surface mount component

do you think i can find this in Qatar??

i damaged my new CopterControl flight controller and need to replace this component.

Typical!! I have 4 days off in a row over EID and nothing to fly!!!

Your best best is the electronics shops near Arab bank roundabout (discussed previously).  Specifically, there is a shop which is the official dealer for RS Electronics, who can source things which are not in stock. I forgot its name, but they do list that they are dealers for RS Electronics (which is like Digikey), and is on the opposite side of the road from Bashir Radio etc.

Hey Anwar

Thanks for the feedback but i have ordered from RS Electronics in the UK

I have tried looking for that shop but can find it.

I have found Bashir and been there a few times but never the one you mentioned

do you have any more detailed instructions on how to find it?

Cheers

Ben

This is what is listed in the RS Electronics website.  With the shop name, you should be able to ask around (remembering that it is is on the opposite side of "Al Asmakh" street from Bashir Radio, Annabi etc. Or you can call them !
